House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler believes Antifa is “a myth.”
That is what the Democrat lawmaker from New York told social media figure Austen Fletcher, also known as “Fleccas.”
Fletcher stopped Nadler on the street and “asked him to disavow the Antifa violence/rioting in Portland.”
Nadler replied that Antifa is a myth “that’s being spread only in Washington, D.C.”
The encounter was videotaped and posted on Twitter on Sunday.
As Nadler was walking into his car, Fletcher quipped back, “Sir, there’s videos everywhere online. There’s fires and riots. They’re throwing fireworks at federal officers, DHS is there. Look online, it gets crazy, Mr. Nadler.”
Protesters have been inciting violence and chaos in Portland, and other cities across the country, according to Department of Homeland Security officials.
On Sunday, protesters in Portland breached a fence surrounding the city’s federal courthouse building where federal agents have been stationed. Police declared the incident a riot and ordered people to leave the area.
Antifa has been described as an “anti-fascist” movement that aims to cause a disruption in the political system.
Protests calling for racial justice have been ongoing since the death of George Floyd, a Black man, who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.
