Rep. Thomas Massie said he is looking for an “articulate person among the group” of George Floyd protesters, who have been rioting and looting businesses.
The Republican lawmaker from Kentucky made the comment during a Thursday radio interview with WVHU’s “The Tom Roten Morning Show.”
Massie said that people protesting the death of Floyd, a black man who was killed by a white police officer, reflect the country’s educational system and he thinks that is problematic.
“What we do need nationally is to relook at our educational system,” Massie said. “I mean, a lot of these protesters, and again I’m falling victim right now to calling them protesters. A lot of them are just violent looters and lawless criminals at this point.”
He noted that many of the protesters, who are looting stores and destroying property, are young and questioned how they were raised and what they were taught by their parents and by the educational system.
“Is there an articulate person among the group who are upset with the way things are going that could step up to a microphone and speak for all the people? I’m not seeing that person,” he said.
He called for protesters to act the way Martin Luther King Jr. did while speaking out against racial inequality in the 1960s.
When asked if there needs to be an overhaul of the police system, Massie said there are a “few bad apples here and there” but backed police officers, who put their lives on the line to serve every day.
He said he would not like to see military police used to help quell protests.
