The former People magazine reporter who interviewed Donald Trump spokesman "John Miller" in 1991 said Friday that the developer later admitted that he was the spokesman — and suggested that Trump most likely leaked the tape to The Washington Post because "I lost the tape… 25 years ago."
"He apologized afterwards and said he was sorry," Sue Carswell, who now works for Vanity Fair, told Megyn Kelly on Fox News.
"He admitted it to you?" Kelly asked.
"Yeah. I mean in another phone call," Carswell responded. "But not obviously during the conversation."
"Did you say, 'Why did you do that?"
"Yeah," Carswell responded. "He had no explanation. He just moved the conversation along."
Trump even took Carswell, Marla Maples — his girlfriend at the time — and another People editor to dinner as an apology, she said.
But in an interview with "Today" on NBC Friday, Trump denied that he was "Miller" — and Carswell told Kelly that, if that's true, "I think he should come clean and apologize to me now."
Otherwise, it suggests "that I'm lying," she added. "I'm not lying."
But Carswell then threw a new wrinkle into the controversy when she told Kelly that "the main thing here is that I didn't leak the tape — and there are two people on the conversation.
"I lost the tape," she added.
She told Kelly that she was the only person who had the tape, losing it "25 years ago" when Carswell moved from a house to an apartment.
"Who else would have had a copy of the tape?" Kelly asked.
"Donald Trump," Carswell responded.
"You are suggesting Trump leaked this to The Washington Post?"
"Yes."
"Why?" Kelly asked.
"You got me. He has done stranger things."
"Because he loves publicity?"
"Yes."
"You are suggesting that he may want us talking about this right now because it generates a new cycle, perhaps?"
"Hello, Donald," Carswell responded, laughing.
