Republican strategist Steve Schmidt announced Wednesday he was leaving the Republican Party due to its ties with President Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.
Schmidt, who was a senior adviser to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., during McCain's presidential campaign, made the announcement in a series of tweets.
"Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party," Schmidt tweeted. "It is fully the party of Trump."
The strategist took aim at members of the party saying the GOP is "corrupt, indecent, and immoral . . . it is filled with feckless cowards who disgrace and dishonor the legacies of the party's greatest leaders," Schmidt tweeted.
Now, he believes Democrats must be elected to ensure the "absolute and utter repudiation of Trump and his vile enablers in the 2018 election by electing Democratic majorities."
Schmidt slammed Republicans over the separation of children from families on the border.
"Every one of these complicit leaders will carry this shame throughout history," Schmidt tweeted.
Schmidt has been a frequent critic of Trump. After Trump met with world leaders at the G-7 summit June 10, Schmidt said he "disgraced the presidency."
"From his slovenly appearance to unpreparedness, ignorance, and arrogance, he beclowned himself," Schmidt said in the June 10 tweet.
