A Democrat member of the House who's been pushing for the chamber to impeach President Donald Trump claimed in an interview that at least one Republican indicated he or she might be in favor of the measure as well.
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, told C-Span on Tuesday that his effort to impeach Trump is gaining bipartisan steam.
"I've actually had a Republican member who said, 'You know, I'm strongly considering impeachment now,'" Green told C-Span's Pedro Echevarria.
"I can only say to you that my suspicion is that there are a good many others who believe that we've reached that point in our history. It's a difficult bridge for some to cross. For me, it is really not about the difficulty as much as it is about the necessity to do something about an unfit president."
Green has spoken about his desire to have Trump impeached on numerous occasions since the latter took office in January 2017. He was able to persuade House Speaker Paul Ryan to allow for an impeachment vote in December, but that garnered just 58 votes and was rejected by 364 members.
While Democrats like Green are calling for impeachment over allegations that Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign and potentially obstructed justice, others want to see the party tone down its impeachment rhetoric.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, for example, recently cautioned Democratic candidates running in the November midterms against taking a stance on the impeachment issue.
