Most Republicans say special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation should be shut down, and agree with President Donald Trump that the probe is a "witch hunt," according to a new Public Policy Polling survey.
According to the survey , conducted between Aug. 27-28, 67 percent of Republicans and 33 percent of independents surveyed believe the investigation should be shut down, while 80 percent of Republicans agree with Trump's "witch hunt" claims.
However, even though most Republicans want the investigation to end, 62 percent still believe Mueller's probe should "follow the facts wherever they lead."
PPP surveyed 572 registered voters for the poll, which carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.
In other findings:
- 26 percent of Republicans said they'd find Mueller's report credible if it finds that any campaign member or associate was involved in Russian interference;
- 71 percent said they would not find it credible;
- 49 percent said former campaign manager Paul Manafort's conviction makes Mueller's investigation less credible;
- 30 percent of Republicans think Trump should pardon Manafort;
- 38 percent say Trump should not pardon Manafort;
- 32 percent were not sure if Trump should pardon him.
- 90 percent of Republicans and 94 percent of independents said not even the president is above the law;
- 46 percent of independents have a favorable opinion of Mueller, compared to 36 percent for Trump.
