Richard Grenell to Newsmax TV: Trump's 'Style' Works for US

(Newsmax TV/"Greg Kelly Reports")

For those criticizing President Donald Trump's "style" in dealing with world leaders, they are leaving out the fact the president is getting it done for the American people overseas, according to Amb. Richard Grenell to Newsmax TV.

"We're really making a difference in NATO, how we're having talks on trade with the Europeans and the Europeans are noticing it," Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, told Wednesday's "Greg Kelly Reports."

"I would love to debate all day long the people who want to talk about his style, because I think the evidence shows that his style actually works."

Grenell pointed to the "$130 billion in new defense spending" at NATO did not show up without the work of President Trump.

"Now, this is something the previous administrations, not just President [Barack] Obama, but also President [George W.] Bush, they had a different style in negotiations, and they didn't get defense spending raised," Grenell told host Greg Kelly. "They did not get the amount of money that's coming in for European NATO countries spending more on defense. That directly benefits the American people."

As for the criticism Trump has been pushing our allies too hard, Grenell said countries have always leveled that claim on U.S. leaders – unfairly, in fact.

"I spent eight years and the U.N., but I'll tell you there's only one country that gets in trouble for putting forward itself and being aggressive about its own policies, and that's the United States," Grenell said. "Everybody else does it. Everybody else tries to push their way forward. We just have a president who's really good at it.

"So, I don't think you can hate the player. If you hate the game, that's a different thing."

As for the relations with Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel, Grenell said the aggressiveness has long been needed.

"I really think that Angela Merkel and President Trump have a good relationship," he said. "It's not warm and fuzzy; they're not going to hang out at the spa together. But I would say there's incredible respect."

Trump has told Merkel he understands her Germany First approach, but told her: "I just have to play a tougher game with you now."

"She's been quite good at defending Germany," Grenell said. "You look at they don't pay their NATO bill, for instance, the Germans don't; yet, there's 50,000 American troops protecting them, and they're buying Russia gas at this incredible level.

"So, while they're not paying their NATO bill, they're feeding the beast. They get away with it."
