Russia special counsel Robert Mueller asked the General Services Administration last June to preserve all documents on President Donald Trump's transition to the White House, CNN reported Tuesday.
The GSA request came on June 22, about a month after Mueller was named to head the probe by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Earlier documents viewed by CNN through a Freedom of Information Act request showed that the FBI's probe, headed then by Director James Comey, was focused on narrower issues.
However, the broader request asked the GSA to persevere documents, electronics and communications from the Trump transition team.
"As a follow up to our request, we thought it best to send GSA an official preservation letter," one email said. "Your staff has been extraordinarily responsive and we appreciate their patience with our (my) questions."
GSA redacted the name of the FBI agent who sent the email in the copy obtained by CNN.
The agency later handed over thousands of pages of documents, according to the report.
