Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating former national security adviser Mike Flynn's work on a documentary attacking an exiled Turkish cleric as part of a wider probe of Flynn's possible financial ties to Turkey and Russia.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the FBI is preparing to interview consultants hired by Flynn to work on the film targeting Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of trying to overthrow the country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a failed 2016 coup.
The focus on the film comes amid signs Flynn may be working on a deal with Mueller.
The Journal first reported the unfinished film deal in May — describing it was at the heart of Flynn's work for Turkish interests while he served as top adviser on then-candidate Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
According to the Journal, the Flynn Intel Group signed a $530,000 contract with a Turkish businessman with close ties to Erdogan, and Flynn and business partner Bijan Kian hired consultants to create the anti-Gulen film.
David Enders, a Beirut-based freelance journalist hired to film interviews, has told the Journal that Flynn's company tried to conceal its role in the documentary.
FBI agents have contacted both Enders as well as Rudi Bakhtiar, a former CNN anchor hired to work on the documentary, to ask them about their roles in the venture, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources.
