Giuliani: 'Slight Opening' Remains for Trump to Talk With Mueller

By    |   Monday, 09 July 2018 10:11 AM EDT

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation can go on "forever," as President Donald Trump is innocent and there is no evidence to prove that he broke any crimes in the 2016 election, his personal attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Monday, while conceding there remains a 'slight opening' that Trump could sit down to talk with Mueller.

"In any event, they have to come to grips with the fact they are investigating an innocent man," Giuliani told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "You can do that forever because you never find any evidence. Somebody has to put an end to this. I hope they do."

Giuliani added that there has been no final decision about Trump sitting down with Mueller's team, even though there could be a "slight opening."

The "slight opening," would be if Mueller's team has some "narrow questions about collusion, there they're confused, did he find out something, did he know something, did he talk to anyone?" Giuliani said. "We would be happy to give them answers so long as we knew they were concluding [the investigation]."

However, Mueller's team hasn't "come up with scintilla of evidence, no facts that the president had anything to do with Russians," said Giuliani. "As the president tells me all the time. I don't understand this investigation. I never talked with the Russians. I never did anything with the Russians. How could they be investigating me?"

Mueller also is "surrounded by people he shouldn't have picked," and who were Democrats in favor of Hillary Clinton defeating Trump, he added.

"I want to see all their texts," Giuliani said. "I want to see if they're texting the same things. I'm willing to bet a dinner they are. Two or three are texting horrible things about Trump."

On Friday, Giuliani told The New York Times that Trump would not agree to an interview with Mueller unless the special counsel can provide evidence that the president committed a crime, and that his testimony is essential to completing the Russia investigation.

Trump's defense lawyers are entitled to have information about the basis of the investigation, said Giuliani on Monday, but "we don't see any."

"You show us something, we have something to answer to, otherwise you're conducting a totally illegitimate investigation," he said. "A lot of people have come to that conclusion."

Giuliani also argued against the possibility that Trump could face obstruction of justice charges in connection with firing former FBI Director James Comey, as he "had the right" to take that action.

"The report would almost say, it was complete abdication of responsibility if he didn't fire him," said Giulini referring to Department of Justice Michael Horowitz's report on the investigation. "He was crying out to be fired, and his explanations are perfectly lawful."
