Special counsel Robert Mueller has spent over $5 million so far probing Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, ABC News reports.

The expenditures include paying a team of more than 16 attorneys, support staff and dozens of FBI agents, as well as travel expenses and office supplies, according to the network news. A detailed breakdown of the costs is expected to be released soon.

ABC News noted investigations can often take years and run into the tens of millions of dollars. Mueller was appointed in May.

CNN reported the money to fund Mueller's operations comes from a separate revolving Treasury Department account for "permanent, indefinite appropriations."
