Amid calls for transparency, President Donald Trump risks the future power of the executive if he succumbs and releases the transcript of his call with Ukraine, according to Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis.
"It's a very dangerous precedent, and I think it's going to really harm any president, whether it's this president or a future president's ability to talk to world leaders candidly," Johnson said, per The Hill.
President Donald Trump denied trying to coerce Ukraine into investigating his Democratic political rival Joe Biden in a July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy by threatening U.S. military aid – despite a intelligence official's whistleblower complaint.
Now, amid Democratic threats of impeachment and some Republicans calling for transparency, President Trump is weighing whether to clear himself amid Democratic resistance.
"I may do it because it was a very interesting call," Trump said. "It was a very nice call. I hope you get to see it and I hope you get to see it soon."
But Johnson argues giving in to release the transcript or whistleblower's complaint "would be the worst possible precedent," per The Hill.
"This is not something that Congress necessarily has to have its hands on," Johnson reportedly said.
