Alabama voters will have to be the "judge and jury" on whether GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore is elected, Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel says.
In an interview airing Sunday with radio host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable,” McDaniel said allegations against Moore of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls are “concerning.”
But she said Alabama officials have already said the ballot is set for the Dec. 12 special election to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
"The allegations were obviously very concerning, concerning to the degree that [the RNC] pulled our resources," McDaniel said.
"[But] Roy Moore cannot be replaced on the ballot," she continued. "He is the candidate. The Alabama [Republican] Party has stood by that. Now the Alabama voters are going to have to be the judge and jury on this."
The interview remarks were posted by The Hill.
The RNC decided earlier this month to step away from a joint agreement to raise funds for Moore, and also canceled a program for sending canvassers into the field before the special election.
Moore will face Democratic opponent Doug Jones in the election.
President Donald Trump has not yet said if he’ll campaign for Moore, but suggested last week it’s more important for voters to ensure a Democrat isn’t elected.
