Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Sunday pushed back on a report that special counsel Robert Mueller has expanded the Russia investigation to also look at "possible financial crimes."
In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Rosenstein said Mueller needs to come to him to go "outside" the scope of the probe.
"If he finds evidence of a crime that's within the scope of — director Mueller and I have agreed is the appropriate scope of this investigation — that he can.
"If it is something outside that scope, he needs to come to the acting attorney general, at this time, me, for permission to expand his investigation."
Rosenstein noted "we don't talk about that publicly."
"So the speculation you've seen in the news media, that's not something that I have said, it's not anything director Mueller said, we don't know who is saying it, or how credible those sources are."
