Florida Poll: Rubio 'One of the Most Unpopular Senators' in the US

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is under water in his job approval ratings from home state constituents – and a majority say he shouldn't seek re-election, a new poll shows.

The Public Policy Polling survey, released Tuesday, is in stark contrast to a poll released just a day earlier that showed solid support for the former GOP presidential primary candidate launching a re-election bid.

In the new breakdown from the Democrat-leaning PPP, the survey finds 32 percent of voters approve of Rubio's Senate performance, while 54 percent disapprove.

"Those numbers make him one of the least popular Senators in the country," the PPP analysis concluded.

Among Republicans, he has a 51 percent approval rating and a 37 percent disapproval rating. Among independents, he scratches out only a 25 percent approval compared with a 54 percent disapproval, while Democrats give him 18 percent approval and 70 percent disapproval.

Only 39 percent of voters in the state want him to run for re-election this year, and 51 percent say he should stay out of it, the poll finds.

"If Rubio did decide to run, he would face a tough contest," the PPP analysis states, trailing Democratic Florida Rep. Patrick Murphy 44-43 in a hypothetical matchup.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine State is a tossup when it comes to the likely presidential matches, according to PPP.

Here's that breakdown:

  • Democrat Hillary Clinton: 40 percent
  • GOP Donald Trump: 41 percent
  • Libertarian Gary Johnson: 4 percent
  • Green Party Jill Stein: 2 percent.

In a head-to-head, Trump leads Clinton with 45 percent to 44 percent.

The margin of error in the survey is 3.6 percent.
