Rep. Pete King Lauds Giuliani's Mueller 'Ground Rules'

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., on Tuesday said Rudy Giuliani appears to be setting up a "very good set of ground rules" for a potential sitdown between President Donald Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller.

During an interview on Fox News, King touted Giuliani's strategy of limiting the Trump-Mueller interview to the topic of collusion with Russia and not obstruction of justice.

"On obstruction, if they're talking about the president firing [former FBI Director James] Comey, which I think he had the right and obligation to do . . . to try to read into a lawful act carried out by the president as obstruction of justice makes it too easy for Mueller to get a perjury trap," King told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

But there could be a perjury trap, King said, if Mueller can get another witness to testify Trump wanted to fire Comey to stop the investigation into Russian collusion.

"This all began because of allegations of collusion," King said. "So far nothing has come up. If anything had come up the Democrats on the intelligence committee would have leaked it out. It is not out there. So, I would say focus on collusion. The president, I believe, is more than willing to answer any questions on collusion. There can't be a perjury trap on that."

When asked if he thinks Mueller's team will interview Trump, King said he believes the foundation for that is being set.

"I have known Rudy for over 50 years," King said. "He is 10 steps ahead of the rest of us . . . f Mueller wants an interview, it's there and up to him."
