Donald Trump's recent criticism of New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is making it harder for House Speaker Paul Ryan to endorse him just yet, conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said Thursday.

"Trump is making this tougher on Ryan than it needs to be," Limbaugh told his radio audience. "When he went after Susana Martinez, Ryan has no choice but to be protective of her. I mean, she's chairman of Republican Governors."

Trump at a rally in Albuquerque earlier this week said that Martinez "has got to do a better job," saying she has done nothing about the rise in food stamp recipients in her state or about Syrian refugees settling there.

Martinez has declined to endorse the presumptive nominee of her party and didn't attend the Albuquerque event, telling reporters she was too busy.

Limbaugh said it doesn't matter whether Trump was right or wrong. By going after Martinez, Trump gave Ryan a reason to hold off a while longer on an endorsement.

"Ryan can't come out and endorse Trump the day after he dumps on a Republican governor," he said. "You just can't do it, no matter who's right or wrong. No matter what Trump said about her, right or wrong, it doesn't matter, just the optics."
