Rush Defends Pruitt, Says Criticisms Are Politically Motivated

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh pledged his support of embattled Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt Thursday, saying he hopes Pruitt stays on the job despite pressure to resign over a series of allegations regarding ethics violations.

Limbaugh argued that Pruitt "has become, outside of [President Donald] Trump, the single biggest target of the American left" on his show.

Pruitt drew criticism after he rented a room from a woman whose husband is a Washington, D.C. lobbyist and over claims he broke ethics guidelines regarding airline travel. Two EPA officials received significant raises as well, although Pruitt said he stopped the raises from taking place once he heard about them.

Pruitt has denied doing anything wrong.

Limbaugh said the criticisms of Pruitt are politically driven, using the example of former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page. The pair is alleged to have tried to help Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and, later, attempt to bring down Trump via the Russia investigation.

"You know, they're going after Pruitt, how come Strzok and Lisa Page haven't been canned? How come they are still getting every benefit, every perk, and their salaries, even though they've been demoted and reassigned? Why are they still even working there?" Limbaugh said. "See, this is how we lose focus of this stuff."

Limbaugh closed the segment by noting that Gina McCarthy, an EPA administrator under former President Barack Obama, spent thousands of dollars on airline travel overseas during her tenure.

"So Pruitt's not doing anything that hasn't been done," Limbaugh said. "I'm not saying that's an excuse to continue it. I'm saying this is a bogus series of charges. He's being singled out for doing something that has always been done because that's how they view the best way to go get the guy and discredit him, rather than to try to frighten people about what he's doing with the regulatory side of things.

"I just hope Scott Pruitt hangs in, bottom line."
