Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pa., criticized President Donald Trump’s recent statements, saying they are “not helpful.”
“These comments that come out of the president’s mouth are not helpful to NATO, they’re not helpful to international stability, and that’s a very big concern,” Costello said Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day.”
He also critiqued Trump over the president clarifying a statement he made during a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which the president openly questioned his own intelligence agencies' finding that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.
“We don’t know what was said by our own president in a 2-hour meeting, but we know what that following press conference was, and the fact that nothing was said for 24 hours,” Costello said, referring to Trump’s wait to clarify the statement as criticism mounted.
“It’s deeply damaging and we shouldn’t sugarcoat that. And we shouldn’t accept that somehow that a double negative, or a should instead of a shouldn’t, or a shouldn’t instead of a should, is somehow going to make all of this go away and everything’s good again. Because that’s not the case,” Costello added.
