The San Diego Union Tribune has praised President Donald Trump's new sanctions against Russia, but says the commander in chief must go farther.
"On Thursday, the White House offered the strongest evidence yet that there are limits on the president's seeming Russophilia," the newspaper says in an editorial published Friday.
"The Treasury Department and national security officials accused Russia of cyber espionage efforts targeting U.S. energy, nuclear, commercial, water, aviation and manufacturing sectors. The administration also confirmed that 19 Russian individuals and five Russian companies faced sanctions for attempting to interfere with the 2016 election and for other 'nefarious' actions undermining the U.S.
"In a third salvo, Trump joined the leaders of Britain, France and Germany in signing a joint statement holding Russia responsible for the recent poisoning in Britain."
The Union-Tribune says the sanctions "won't go nearly far enough" for those who believe Moscow helped Trump win the 2016 presidential election.
"But on an issue this vitally important, even baby steps deserve applause. Here's hoping for more White House sober tough-mindedness on Russia from here on out," the newspaper says.
