Sen. John McCain said Thursday that President Barack Obama's sanctions against Russia for its hacking activities were "long overdue" — though they were a "small price for Russia to pay for [a] brazen attack on U.S. democracy."
The Arizona Republican, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, posted his comments on Twitter:
House Speaker Paul Ryan also called Obama's move "overdue," adding it was "an appropriate way to end eight years of failed policy with Russia.
"Russia does not share America’s interests," the Wisconsin Republican said. "In fact, it has consistently sought to undermine them, sowing dangerous instability around the world.
"While today's action by the administration is overdue, it is an appropriate way to end eight years of failed policy with Russia," Ryan added. "And it serves as a prime example of this administration's ineffective foreign policy that has left America weaker in the eyes of the world."
President Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats Thursday and closed two Russian compounds via executive order in response to Moscow's hacking during the presidential election and for harassing American diplomats.
The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed the actions, saying they added to "already destroyed" relations between the United States and Moscow.
