Bernie Sanders is holding a slight lead over Hillary Clinton entering Tuesday's Wisconsin primaries, according to Real Clear Politics averages, but a new NBC News/Survey Monkey poll puts Clinton ahead of the Vermont senator by eight points.

"It's pretty close," Real Clear Politics co-founder and executive editor Tom Bevan told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program Tuesday. "In seven polls over a 10-day period ending Sunday, she is trailing by two-and-one-half points roughly. It's pretty close. I think it will be, could be a long night there on the Democratic side."

In the latest NBC poll, conducted online from March 28-April 3 of 14,071 adults:
  • Clinton, 51 percent;
  • Sanders, 42 percent;
  • Independents leaning Democratic: Sanders, 58 percent; Clinton, 36 percent;
  • Solid Democrats: Clinton, 56 percent; Sanders, 37 percent.
Under the state's open primary format, registered voters can participate in either the Democratic or Republican primaries.

Meanwhile, an Emerson College poll released Monday put Sanders ahead of Clinton,
  • Sanders, 51 percent;
  • Clinton, 43 percent;
But two weeks ago, Sanders was trailing by six points in the Emerson poll.

NBC reports that according to its national poll numbers, Clinton remains clearly ahead of Sanders, but in Wisconsin, Sanders is remaining competitive with her.

In the competition for Wisconsin's white voters, who had represented 87 percent of the state's electorate in 2008, the two Democratic candidates are in a tie.
