Palin's First 2014 Endorsements: Pierson and Abbott in Texas

By    |   Wednesday, 19 February 2014 09:11 PM EST

Republican star Sarah Palin has given her first endorsements of the 2014 voting cycle to Dallas tea party leader Katrina Pierson in her underdog bid against incumbent Republican Rep. Pete Sessions, and to Greg Abbott, "another good conservative," in the Texas gubernatorial race.

"Texas, it starts with you!" Palin wrote on Facebook on Wednesday, slamming the "GOP Beltway crowd" for "compromise and capitulation on important issues like amnesty, Obamacare, and the ever-increasing federal debt."

Palin called Pierson "an emerging leader and important voice for the future of the grassroots conservative movement," calling her life story one "full of hardships she has fought to overcome" — an apparent reference to Pierson's admission to a shoplifting charge in 1997 that helped turn her life around.

"A feisty fighter for freedom, Katrina is taking on a powerful incumbent who has so lost touch with the people of his district that he’s not even bothering to spend much time in Texas anymore," Palin wrote.

Palin also dropped the name of Texas tea party favorite Sen. Ted Cruz, saying he had described Pierson as “an utterly fearless, principled conservative.”

"He should know," Palin wrote. "Katrina was among the conservative grassroots warriors in Texas who worked tirelessly to elect Sen. Cruz."

Palin also urged voters to "check the box for another good conservative: Greg Abbott for governor of Texas."

"Like Katrina, Greg has overcome many personal obstacles and challenges, which have made him a believer in the power of liberty and the need to defend our freedoms from the overreach of an out-of-control federal government," Palin said, adding: "If he is good enough for Ted Nugent, he is good enough for me! "

But Palin's shout-out to Abbott came before his campaign reportedly dropped the rocker from appearances at Abbott's public events in the wake of Nugent's slur against President Barack Obama in a January interview as a "communist-nurtured, subhuman mongrel."

Pierson told Breitbart she was honored by Palin's first endorsement of the year.

"I am honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of Gov. Sarah Palin, to have the team I have, and the fact that Gov. Palin heard our calls for battle against the entrenched establishment," Pierson said before adding that Palin's endorsement "highlights the importance of Texas in the battle against big government.”
