White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday clarified that President Donald Trump does still believe that Russia is targeting U.S. elections.
The clarification came hours after the president responded "no" to a question about whether Russia is still targeting American elections.
Sanders said the president "said no to answering questions" when he addressed reporters during before a Cabinet meeting.
"The first thing the president says after the question was asked, 'thank you very much.' Then he said 'No, I'm not answering anymore questions,'" Sanders said. "I talked to the president. He wasn't answering that question. He was saying no, he's not taking questions."
Sanders then rattled off steps the administration is taking to guard against future Russian interference.
"We certainly believe that we're taking steps to make sure that (Russia) can't do it again unlike previous administrations. This president is taking bold action in reform to make sure it doesn't happen again. But he does believe that they would target certainly U.S. elections again," Sanders said during Wednesday's press briefings.
"We wouldn't spend as much time and effort as we are if we didn't believe that they were still looking at us. From the beginning of his administration, President Trump has taken action to defend our election system from meddling in interference," Sanders said.
