Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., facing possible censure from Republican officials in Nebraska for his critical comments about former President Donald Trump, said his party needs to choose “between conservatism and madness.”
Sasse’s latest remarks came in a five-minute video he released on Thursday. The Hill noted state GOP officials want to censure him at a Republican State Central Committee meeting on Feb. 13.
“I want to talk to the state’s central committee,” he said in the video. “I’ve heard from many of you in the days since the attack on the Capitol threatening another censure from what I said about the president’s lies after the election.
“As a friend and fellow Republican, I want to shoot straight. I’m not going to spend any time trying to talk you out of another censure.”
The Hill noted Sasse did not support Trump’s candidacy in 2016 and 2020.
“Now, many of you are hacked off that I condemned his lies that led to a riot,” he said. "Let’s be clear: the anger in the state party has never been about me violating principle or abandoning conservative policy. I’m one of the most conservative voters in the senate. The anger has always simply been about me not bending the knee to one guy.”
Sasse said in January he believed Trump had disregarded his oath of office. The Hill noted that he is one of five Republican senators who voted to table a notion to declare the Senate impeachment trial unconstitutional.
