CPAC Chair Schlapp to Newsmax TV: Trump's Speech Should Look to GOP's Future

By    |   Thursday, 25 February 2021 07:24 PM EST

Former President Donald Trump should focus on the Republican Party's future when he addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday, according to event chairman Matt Schlapp on Newsmax TV.

Trump was scheduled to make his first official public appearance since leaving the White House last month. Supporters will be watching closely to see if the former president focuses on the past (losing the election), the present (President Joe Biden's policies), or the future.

"I can understand why he wants to settle some scores, there's been some nasty comments from some establishment D.C. Republicans," Schlapp told co-hosts Sean Spicer and Lyndsay Keith on Thursday's "Spicer & Co.

"But I think he should focus on how we stop this Socialist policy that's coming out of the White House, coming out of Congress, and talk about the future. Talk about what we can do if we keep this coalition together — Republicans, conservatives, these [Make America Great Again] voters [who] are a little more independent minded."

Schlapp, chairman of CPAC sponsor the American Conservative Union, said "President Trump is the key" to Republicans recapturing the House, the Senate and the presidency.

Although Trump will headline this weekend's CPAC in Orlando, Florida, other big-name Republicans will speak at the conference. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., Rep. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Gov. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were among those scheduled to appear.

"We're going to focus on the Bill of Rights, and each and every one of the Bill of Rights because every one of them is controversial when it comes to the new Socialist bend of the Democratic Party," Schlapp said. "We're going to walk through what we can do to ensure them.

"And of course, we're going to spend a lot of time about what happened around the election. We must never elect a president the way we did last time ever again. And we gotta make sure if we're going to have this many mail-in ballots, that there has to be a security asscoaited with it."
