Boston Herald Poll: Scott Brown Trails in NH Senate Race

By    |   Thursday, 19 June 2014 10:05 PM EDT

Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire is leading her Republican challenger Scott Brown by double digits in a new poll.

The results of the poll,  conducted by the Boston Herald and Suffolk University, show that 40 percent of those polled would vote for Brown in the Republican primary scheduled for Sept. 9, while 38 percent are undecided.

In a matchup with three potential candidates for Senate, Shaheen earned 49 percent of the support and Brown garnered 39 percent.

The poll of 800 people was almost evenly split between voters registered as Democrats (28 percent) or Republicans (30 percent). Forty percent of those surveyed were classified as "Independent/Other."

Brown also received a favorability rating of just 35 percent, putting him behind several other politicians in the survey — a list that includes Shaheen (52 percent), Hillary Clinton (48 percent), and Barack Obama (45 percent).

Seventy-three percent of the voters polled said they would be either somewhat likely or very likely to vote in the Republican primary for Senate and Governor, and 43 percent think the state's economy has stayed the same the past two years.

The margin of error for the overall sample is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, while the GOP primary sample's margin is 4.8 points.

Brown served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1998-2004, and then in the State Senate from 2004-2010. He served as a U.S. Senator from 2010-2013. He is now a New Hampshire resident and is trying to return to Washington for the Granite State.

Shaheen has served in the Senate since 2009.
