Former Vice President Joe Biden still has a shot at the presidential nomination after his losses in New Hampshire and Iowa through his name recognition, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer told Newsmax TV Tuesday, but for him to place so poorly, so early does not bode well for him.
"I think because of his staying power that he's got [and his] name recognition, he's been the frontrunner for so long, I think he can limp out of here to South Carolina," Spicer told Newsmax TV's John Bachman.
With the publication of former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's past comments on race and the city's stop and frisk laws, however, Biden might have a "new life going into South Carolina or Nevada, where it is a bit more diverse than both New Hampshire and Iowa."
"I think right now, you've got to have a tough case for both Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren," said Spicer.
Meanwhile, Sen. Amy Klobuchar's numbers keep climbing, which means the Minnesota Democrat's donations will also climb, said Spicer.
"What's killing Biden, while he may still be in the 20s nationally, people know that because he came and did so poorly in Iowa and tonight, it makes it hard to go to donors," said Spicer, adding that Iowa and New Hampshire aren't "delegate-rich," but the super Tuesday states are.
Bloomberg, he added, will be a challenge once the South Carolina primary takes place.
"The biggest X-factor that I've seen in modern politics is Mike Bloomberg," said Spicer. "Bloomberg actually already opened up offices in the Virgin Islands and he's playing delegate math in a way that no one else is."
Bloomberg is also touting the support of Biden's former boss Barack Obama, said Spicer, and he's "trying to take the window away from Biden ... that's what's going to make a really interesting fight. You've got the passion in the grassroots with Bernie Sanders, and then you've got the establishment elite. They're probably in [with] Bloomberg."
