Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer insisted he never "knowingly" lied to the public.

His comments came during a Thursday interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Asked if he had ever "lied to the American people," Spicer answered: "I don't think so."

Pressed for a stronger response, he added: "Look, again, you want to find something. I have not knowingly done anything to do that, no."

And Spicer maintained his surprise appearance during the Emmy Awards had nothing to do with any attempt to rehab his image.

"I feel very good with my image," he said. "I'm very happy with myself. I'm able to go out and explain a lot of things now."

And he said President Donald Trump was pleased with his cameo on the show.

"He was very supportive," Spicer said. "He thought I did a great job."
