White House press secretary Sean Spicer said President Donald Trump was not diminishing chief strategist Steve Bannon's role earlier Wednesday when he said Bannon is a "good guy. But, I make my own decision. I don't have people making decisions."
Appearing on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," Spicer told guest host Dana Perino that Trump simply was trying to point out he won the election based on policies he has laid out since the 1980s and not the result of anyone else's ideas.
"I think the line has been blurred up a little bit," Spicer said. "He wanted to make it very clear. At the same time, express confidence in the team that's here and the talent that he has assembled."
Bannon, who was CEO of Breitbart media before being hired initially as the Trump campaign's chief executive, has been derided by critics as having undue influence over the president, including portrayals as The Grim Reaper on "Saturday Night Live."
Speculation over Bannon's future in the administration has grown over the past several days amid reports Trump has told him and top aide Jared Kushner, who is Trump's son-in-law, to work out their differences.
