President Donald Trump will donate the salary he receives as president at the end of the year, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday, and he will let the media decide where the money goes, according to NBC News.

"The president's intention right now is to donate his salary at the end of the year," Spicer said at a Monday press briefing.

On Sunday, MSNBC's legal unit noted that it had requested information about whether Trump had donated his first month's salary as he had said he would. The White House declined to release proof that he had done so.

During the Monday briefing, NBC News reported that Spicer appeared to joke with the assembled reporters about their opinion on where Trump should donate his salary.

"He has kindly asked that you all help determine where that goes. The way that we can avoid scrutiny is to let the press corps determine where it should go," Spicer said.

However, Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold said Spicer's request was real.

The president gets $400,000 a year, paid in a monthly salary by federal law. Trump would have received his first paycheck for $33,333 on Feb. 20, NBC News reported.

Trump told "60 Minutes" in an interview after his election that he would take $1 a year as salary.
