The future of mercurial White House spokesman Sebastian Gorka now comes into question with the departure of chief strategist Steve Bannon on Friday, officials told The Daily Beast.
Gorka, who is popular for facing down challenges of the administration by cable TV media hosts, had reported directly to Bannon, with whom he had worked for at Breitbart, according to the report. Gorka, the deputy assistant to the president, is currently on vacation and did not comment on questions of his status, Bloomberg reported.
Also, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Friday afternoon she did not have "any update" on Gorka's job status.
The addition of Gen. John Kelly as the replacement for former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus has led to a number of high-profile departures from the White House, including controversial communications director Anthony Scaramucci.
While it has been thought Gorka's public defenses of the administration on cable TV – many times combative – received praise from the president, sources told The Daily Beast that Gen. Kelly was "displeased" by them in his early review of the White House staff.
It leaves Gorka's future "extremely uncertain," according to a source, although Trump's affinity for challenging the "fake news industrial complex" might remain Gorka's service to the Trump's media messaging as an administration intermediary.
