President Donald Trump's former deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka said it was "disappointing" someone in the White House wanted to "spin" his resignation on Friday into suggestions the decision to leave wasn't his, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.
"How disappointing. I resigned," he said in texts to the newspaper. "It's very disappointing that someone wished to spin this."
He also said in his text he told Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly "today and emailed him today" about his resignation.
However, a White House official said otherwise in a statement.
"Sebastian Gorka did not resign, but I can confirm he no longer works at the White House," the statement read.
News of Gorka's departure was revealed Friday by The Federalist, which claimed to have details of his resignation letter where he reiterated his support for the president, but said, "It is clear to me that forces that do not support the MAGA promise are – for now – ascendant within the White House."
A source familiar with the situation said Gorka, who had been working on national security matters, began to be shut out of security-related meetings after White House chief strategist Steve Bannon left his position earlier this month and returned to head Breitbart News. Gorka at one time worked for Bannon at Breitbart.
Gorka said he's on vacation until Monday.
