Secret Service Director Joseph Clancy says security is being ramped up in preparation for next week's Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
"I would say the candidate threat picture is slightly elevated," Clancy told
CBS News correspondent Jeff Pegues.
"People are bolder ... we have to be prepared for that."
While certain objects like water pistols are banned from being brought anywhere near the convention site, open-carry firearms are permitted under Ohio state law.
That means Clancy's team will have to be on the lookout for armed protestors.
One group, The New Black Panther Party, a "black power" movement,
will carry firearms for self-defense during demonstrations in Cleveland ahead of next week's Republican convention if allowed under Ohio law, the group's chairman said.
Next week’s convention is expected to see Donald Trump officially tapped as the party's presidential nominee.
