Sen. Tim Scott, R- S.C., says he’ll make a “strong” recommendation that fellow GOP South Carolinia Rep. Trey Gowdy be considered for nomination as a Supreme Court justice.
In an interview posted by CNN ahead of its Sunday night "The Van Jones Show," Scott said he hopes President Donald Trump will be receptive to the idea.
"I'm going to recommend Trey Gowdy be one of the folks that I would have a strong recommendation for him serving on the Supreme Court," Scott said, calling the former federal prosecutor “incredibly fair.”
"A guy who will call balls and strikes and not choose a side, even when he's an elected member, at this time in our nation's history that's hard to find," Scott said.
Asked if he had a “litmus test” for any candidate for the position to be vacated by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, Scott responded: "I want someone who understands and appreciates where our country is today, not where it was 50 years ago.”
Gowdy, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced earlier this year that he will leave Congress at the end of his term, and that he intended to return to the justice system.
He was elected in 2010 and was part of the Tea Party wave that swept into Washington that election cycle.
