Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is gearing up for his 2018 reelection campaign with a war chest that tips the scales at more than $5 million.
According to Politico, Cruz has $4.8 million in his Senate reelection account, and a combined $400,000 in his political action committee and the Ted Cruz Victory Committee.
His total through last month stood at $5.2 million.
Cruz raised $1.738 from January-March this year alone, which included almost 18,000 individual donors, Politico reported.
"Sen. Cruz's ongoing fundraising strength is reflective of the effective and principled leadership he has displayed in the U.S. Senate," Cruz spokesperson Catherine Frazier told Politico.
Cruz could face strong competition in both the Republican primary and the general election next year. Last month, Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, announced his intention to run for Cruz's seat. O'Rourke has been in Congress since 2013.
Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, who arrived in Washington four years ago, is considering a bid for Cruz's job as well.
On the Republican side of the House chamber, Rep. Mike McCaul might run against Cruz in the Senate primary election.
