Fifty-seven percent of voters say President Donald Trump should not be allowed to assert executive privilege to block witnesses from testifying at his impeachment trial, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.
Twenty-six percent say Trump should be allowed to use executive privilege to stop some potential witnesses.
Here is how the results of the poll, released Wednesday, break down:
- 48% said they would approve of the Senate removing Trump from office, compared to 45% who disapprove.
- 27% said they approve of the way Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has handled the impeachment case, while 44% disapprove. Twenty-nine percent had no opinion.
- 28% said they approve of the way Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has handled the impeachment case, compared to 40% who do not. Thirty-two percent had no opinion.
- 55% said the Senate should call additional witnesses to testify in the impeachment trial, while 26% said there should be no witnesses.
- 41% approve of the job Trump is doing as president, compared to 55% who disapprove.
The poll, conducted Jan. 24-26, surveyed 1,992 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
