Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions is blaming China’s deception for helping ignite the coronavirus pandemic.
“The coronavirus pandemic makes clear how deceitful, brutal, and ruthless the godless communist Chinese government is,” Sessions said on Monday, according to AL.com. “They lied about the disease, covered it up, suppressed and imprisoned truth-tellers, and outrageously suggested the Chinese virus was an American conspiracy. This is an evil regime, plain and simple. To be clear, the adversary here is the action of the Chinese Communist Party, not the people of China.”
And he added: “I think it’s undeniable that had they acted more promptly they could have curtailed the spread significantly. And I think it’s the nature of the secrecy and the ideology and really the lack of commitment to truth that is so wrong in Communist regimes. That’s just the way they are.”
Sessions is running against former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville in a July runoff for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat Sessions had vacated to become attorney general.
And Tuberville’s campaign manager, Paul Shashy, fired back at Sessions for the comments.
“Career politician Jeff Sessions has held public office for more than 40 years, and he has done nothing to rein in China, so why should we count on him to do anything now?”
A March 10 poll by Cygnal showed 52% of Republican voters favored Tuberville, while 40% supported Sessions.
