The White House believes President Donald Trump is being impeached because he’s “winning in so many ways,” Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, Marc Short, said on Sunday.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Short also said Trump is open to witnesses coming before the Senate in the impeachment trial — a move that has been largely rejected by Senate Republicans.
"I think that right now ... the White House is understanding that the reason this president is being impeached is because he's winning in so many ways,” Short said, adding Trump “has articulated he’s open to witnesses" at a Senate trial.
Short also said he wasn’t alarmed by an editorial in the magazine “Christianity Today” that backed impeachment.
“It’s not surprising that evangelicals are not monolithic in their political viewpoints,” Short said, adding: “There is a lot of us who ... take great gratitude that he is our president."
On the issue of a delay in security aid for Ukraine after a July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Short conceded the lag — and put it at “about 55 days.”
“Yes, there was a delay… the aid was released. At best account, there was maybe 55 days in delays,” he said.
“We want to see a trial in the Senate because we want to see that the president gets exonerated,” he declared.
