U.S. spy agencies in 2015 overheard Russian government officials talking about associates of Donald Trump – months before he declared his presidential bid – The Wall Street Journal reported.
In some cases, the Russians talked about meetings held outside the United States involving Moscow officials and Trump business associates or advisers, the Journal reported.
The intelligence agencies routinely monitor Russian espionage against the United States, including in phone calls and email, the Journal reported. Trump and his associates were not a target of the efforts, the Journal's sources insisted.
According to the Journal, the spy agencies were not sure what to make of the "vague and inconclusive information" from the 2015 conversations, noting Trump was a global celebrity and businessman who produced the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and had sold properties to Russians.
But now, investigators are taking another look at the early reports to see if they can understand them better in light of the emails released Tuesday by Donald Trump Jr., the Journal reported.
