Congressman Steve King said funds taken away from food stamps and Planned Parenthood should be used to help pay for the border wall.
Appearing on CNN's "New Day" morning program, the Iowa Republican said he's comfortable taking funds away from food stamps and other entitlements, partly because of the creation of 10 million jobs that will come simply by enforcing immigration law.
"I'd throw another $5 billion on the pile, and I would find half of a billion right out of Planned Parenthood's budget. And the rest of it could come out of food stamps and the entitlements that are being spread out for people that haven't worked in three generations," King told CNN.
"We gotta put people back to work; this administration will do it," King said.
"I wouldn't impose anything more strict on America than what Michelle Obama did with her school lunch program. Anybody who wants to have food stamps up to the school lunch program, that's fine," King said.
But King said the 47 million people on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — up from 19 million — is wasteful.
"I'm sure that all of them didn't need it. We need to ratchet it back down again," King said. "We built the program to solve the problem of malnutrition in America. And now we have a problem with obesity. When you match up the EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card with what the scales say on some of the folks, I think it's worth looking at."
