Scalise: GOP to Target Welfare in 2018
Rep. Steve Scalise (Susan Walsh)

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., said Tuesday that Republicans ought to focus on welfare reform in 2018.

"I think the best thing that we can do is to go and reform those welfare programs that are trapping people in a failed welfare state," he said on "Fox and Friends." "Let's actually put some work requirements in place so that we can get people back to work [and] rebuild the middle class."

"Let's work to get back to a balanced federal budget. It's something we can absolutely do from the growth we are getting out of the tax cuts," Scalise said before blaming Democrats for not compromising on tax reform.

"When we moved to cut taxes, the Democrats just walked away from the table because they didn't want people to get more of their hard-earned money. But look at how well it's working," he continued. "One of the best things we did is repeal the individual mandate. Because it really undoes a lot of the stools of Obamacare. Now we need to go and fix the things that are broken in health care that are jacking up costs."

Scalise also set his sights on "border security," and gaining the funding needed to "start building the wall" President Donald Trump touted throughout his campaign, and his plan to obtain the funding by reaching a deal with Democrats on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"As it relates to DACA we need to end chain migration. We need to end this lottery system that as we've seen time and time again, is a failed and flawed system," he said.
