The nation's economy was "in the tank" under former President Barack Obama, but President Donald Trump is helping to pull it out again, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., said Wednesday, denying Obama's move to take credit for the current improvements.
"The main idea behind 'Tax Cuts 2.0' is working with President Trump," Scalise told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "We want to make these tax cuts permanent. They are working incredibly well."
Further, Trump is leading the way to "great economic growth," said Scalise, as he has said he wants to stand up for people who were left behind during the past eight years under Obama.
Tax cuts, Scalise said, have worked to boost the economy every time they have been tried.
"You can't call people a moderate if they voted against giving people their own money," he said. "People are hiring workers. People are getting off the couch that had given up looking for work for years to become part of the American dream again. This is what we go to work for, is to help improve the lives of people."
Meanwhile, the "lies of Bernie Sanders and others" that tax cuts would only help millionaires while hurting the middle class have been disproven, Scalise said.
"The middle class is actually benefiting the most," he said. "President Trump wanted to make sure that the middle class, those hard-working taxpayers left behind were the ones who benefit the most, and they are."
