John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who has written for Newsmax Magazine, would be an excellent choice to replace Mike Flynn as President Donald Trump's national security adviser, Sen. Ted Cruz says.
"One person I think would be very, very strong is John Bolton. He's someone who understands the world, he understands the threats of radical Islamic terrorism," the Texas Republican told CNN's Manu Raju on Friday.
But a Bolton nomination could prove controversial among some GOP lawmakers because of his strong support of the war in Iraq.
And Trump has reportedly had an issue with Bolton's white mustache, facial hair the ex-ambassador says he will not shave.
Flynn resigned Monday after a report surfaced that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his pre-inauguration talks with a Russian envoy about sanctions imposed by the Obama administration.
Earlier this week, Trump's first choice to replace Flynn, retired vice admiral and Navy SEAL Robert Harward, turned down the job.
