Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., who has called for protests against the president and the government shutdown this weekend, admitted he could consider paying "a ransom" to fund the border wall.
"Yes, I would consider funding for the wall if that's a ransom that Donald Trump wants, but keep in mind, we have no idea what the president wants," Lieu told "MSNBC Live" with Alex Witt ." Sen. [Chuck] Schumer said it's like negotiating with Jell-O: He's all over the place."
Despite the notion Lieu could support a deal on former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), he did say building a wall is not going to be a permanent solution for the resistance to it.
"Let me tell you one of the greatest signs I saw in these amazing women's marches [Saturday]: It was a little child and she was holding a sign that said, 'build the wall and our generation will tear it down," Lieu told Witt about a Twitter photo he retweeted Sunday.
Lieu does agree with President Trump and GOP leadership on one important point amid the shutdown: A long-term solution is needed for funding the government and dealing with DACA.
"Let's make this very simple for the American people: Continuing Resolutions are harmful to our military. Secretary of Defense [James] Mattis said that a few days ago, and we have been continuing to do these short-term spending measures without ever passing a budget. . . . That's ridiculous. We need to take a stand and fully fund our military and not keep doing these harmful short-term C.R.'s."
President Trump's tweeted Sunday in agreement.
