President Donald Trump on Saturday touted U.S. efforts to conduct coronavirus testing around the nation, asserting more tests have been conducted than anywhere else in the world.
In a tweet, the president reported:
"We have now Tested more than 5 Million People. That is more than any other country in the World, and even more than all major countries combined!"
According to the website Our World In Data, the United States' massive testing total tops the global list, but America comes in second on the metric of tests conducted per 1,000 people, currently dominated by Italy.
In the morning tweet series, Trump also punched back at Democrat-sponsored ads that pound him over his coronavirus response.
He tweeted:
"The Do Nothing Democrats are spending much of their money on Fake Ads. I never said that the CoronaVirus is a 'Hoax', I said that the Democrats, and the way they lied about it, are a Hoax. Also, it did start with 'one person from China', and then grew, & will be a 'Miracle' end!"
He saved a final tweet-storm salvo for The Wall Street Journal editorial blasting his mixed messages to Georgia's GOP Gov. Brian Kemp, who has reopened some businesses, like tattoo parlors, in which social distancing would be next to impossible.
He complained:
"If the Wall Street Journal 'Editorial' writers had called, as they should have, they would have easily found that I was 'NOT happy with the Georgia Governor on Tuesday night.' You said the opposite, and got it wrong as you often do!"
Sixteen states have formally submitted reopening plans to the White House.
