Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., on Thursday called Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., a "thug," after the governor used the word to describe officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Cuomo called ICE "a bunch of thugs," during a Wednesday debate at Hofstra University with fellow Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon, in which he criticized the agency's policy toward young immigrants.
"New York state is the state that is suing Donald Trump for ripping babies from the arms of the mothers," Cuomo said. "New York state is the state that said we will not cooperate with ICE, they're a bunch of thugs."
Zeldin tweeted on Thursday that Cuomo "again exposes himself as the real 'thug' attacking selfless law enforcement officers who last week deported a Nazi from Queens, are defeating MS-13, & combatting drug trafficking, sex trafficking & more!"
The congressman also addressed the debate in an appearance on Fox News, saying the real winner was GOP gubernatorial candidate Marcus Molinaro.
