Former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw said Tuesday that President Donald Trump, despite "very high negatives," continues to hold his base in "hard core Trump country."
In comments on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Brokaw noted the president's supporters tend to blame the "liberal cabal" in the media for Trump's problems — "and they're not entirely wrong."
The remarks begin at the 4:07-minute mark of the video posted above.
"Now, his negatives, obviously, are very high across the country, but in hard core Trump country, he still has a very strong following," Brokaw said.
Brokaw recounted a visit to Powell, Wyoming, "a wonderful, classic, small town, community college, prosperous farm community" that "voted 70 percent for Trump."
"So I went around and said, ‘Where are you now?' 69.9 percent, I'd say at this point, and they blame us [in the media]," Brokaw said. "They say, 'You guys are all in the hands of the Democratic Party. It's a liberal cabal against this president.'
"They don't feel any connection between what we do and how they live their lives. And they're not entirely wrong. Because they look at these shows doing analysis and commenting, and they don't see anybody who looks like them or lives the lives that they do."
Trump's overall approval rating in the Real Clear Politics average stands at 39.2 percent.
In a July 26 Reuters poll, Trump's approval rating among Republicans was 76 percent.
