Billionaire Tom Steyer is kicking off a new phase of his campaign to convince lawmakers to impeach President Donald Trump, The New York Times is reporting.
Steyer, a major Democratic donor, has already been spending tens of millions of dollars on television commercials pushing for Trump's impeachment, the newspaper noted. He also has collected over four million email addresses from people who have signed an impeachment petition.
Now, he is asking those voters to call liberal congressional lawmakers and push for Trump's removal from office, according to the Times.
Democrat leaders have privately pressed him to tone down his impeachment drive and the new phase of the campaign is likely to unsettle them further, the Times reported. But Steyer has intensified his attacks in recent weeks and has emerged as one of Trump's most visible critics, the newspaper added.
"We're just telling the truth to the American people, and it's an important truth," Steyer said of his impeachment campaign. "And if you don't think it's politically convenient for you, that's too bad."
Steyer spoke at the Women's March in Chicago and urged the crowd to get more politically involved, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"This year is different," he said. "This year we have to be more purposeful. Because in 10 months, there are going to be 435 congressional seats up . . . and that means we are going to have to be more organized, we are going to have to be engaged, and we are going to have to go to the polls and flip those seats."
