Tommy John Blames Hall of Fame Exclusion on Support for Trump

By    |   Thursday, 26 September 2024 01:56 PM EDT

Former MLB star Tommy John says his support for former President Donald Trump cost him a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

John, a four-time MLB All-Star who spent over 25 seasons in the major leagues, was asked during an interview this week with "The Michael Kay Show" why he hasn’t been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

"Maybe because I voted for Donald Trump," John said. "Probably. I don’t know. I have no idea. If I knew and I could do something, I would do it. But I can’t."

John was on the Hall of Fame ballot from 1995 to 2009 and is still available for consideration through the Hall of Fame’s Veteran’s Committee in the years 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2020.

During his career, John played for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Yankees, among other teams. He earned 288 wins throughout his time in the MLB, making him the third-highest-winning pitcher not to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, after Roger Clemens and 19th-century player Bobby Mathews.
